Project 4:
literacy promotion among low-income Latino children
A. Addressing Disparities in Language and Social-emotional Skill Acquisition
In this collaborative project ["Literacy Promotion for Latinos", NIH NICHD 1R01HD099125-01A1] led by Dr. Manuel Jiménez (RWJ school of medicine), I work with a multidisciplinary team of pediatricians, psychologists, statisticians, and sociologists to address disparities in language and social-emotional skill acquisition through literacy promotion in primary care settings. Our primary objective is to assess whether aligning primary care literacy promotion with efforts that improve access to material support by leveraging two widely-scaled programs can enhance language and social-emotional skill acquisition among low-income Latino children. Knowledge from this study could fundamentally change the way primary care interventions are designed and implemented to promote equity in developmental health. B. Ready and Healthy for Kindergarten
In this collaborative project [funded by NIH R18 HS028574-01], I work alongside Dr. Manuel Jiménez (RWJ school of medicine) and Dr. Maria Pellerano (Rutgers University, NB) on a project to improve a family wellness program (FWP) and test its effect on child and parenting outcomes. Given the importance of the Kindergarten transition for academic achievement and overall well-being and the importance of parent activities to support literacy development this proposal includes both children and their parents as subjects, who participate in an 8-week workshop series and well as monthly booster activities throughout a whole academic year.
